Old Country Store Prints

...Check out these convenience stores of yester-year. Folks meeting at these "country clubs" to pass the time of day and pick up essential items needed before the big weekly "trip to town", the myriad of advertisements, old gasoline pumps, an old mule, a dog, a few chickens, make these images ones you can look at time and time again and see something new each time... I will sign prints upon request. BWms

BACK when my "memory bank" began to have a few lasting deposits, one of my favorite ones was getting to go to the store. There were little country stores scattered all over the place for the purpose of convenience. Transportation was not so readily available back then; in fact a lot of trips to these stores was made on the back of an old mule or even with a "fast walking stick". As you can imagine, the fast walking stick seemed to "rev it's motor" down on the trip back home--especially if a person had to carry a pretty hefty sack of groceries. BWms

Country Crossroads

bestcrossRoads
While most families made their once a week trip to "town" on Saturdays for the biggest portion of their groceries, feed for the animals and chickens, and other large items, the country stores was a real blessing to the country folk because there was usually one close to where they lived. A busy junction or crossroads almost guaranteed that a Country Store would appear.

Old Buddy’s Country Store

When I was about three or four years old, we were eating supper with my grandparents who lived about six or eight miles from Monticello. I was sitting to the left of my grand daddy and Granny had just set a bowl of blazing hot gravy on the table (what was grits without gravy), and I was reaching for a knife because they didn't give me one (I wonder why) and inadvertently stuck my right hand up to my wrist in that bowl of fire and brimstone. I began to scream loud enough to be heard in Thomasville, Georgia and my Mama and Granny put a corn meal poultice on it, which only made me scream loud enough to be heard in Bainbridge, Georgia which was a good bit farther north than Thomasville. They finally decided to take me into Monticello to the doctor. It was the first time I had ever been to a doctor. Before we got to Monticello, they stopped at a little country store, took me inside and put my hand into the Coca Cola drink box where the ice had melted and the water was blessedly cold.

By then, my screaming could be heard in Atlanta, Georgia until my hand was in that cool water. Remember the old saying, 'It will feel good when it quits hurting' Well, it's true! The nice people who owned the store put ice in a container and me and the ice went quietly (except for the snubs) to the doctor. BWms

Williams Country Store

An interesting rendition of the Country Store: a familiar two-story house in the distance, a woody station wagon, the picnic table by the pond with neglected coke bottles from the evening before. Looks like a good place for late evening fishing.

Old Florida Trading Company

OldTradingCompany
The country store holds a special presence in our cultural past. Today, it is a symbol of simpler times. The original painting of the country store, "Old Florida Trading Company" is a part of the collection at the Museum of Florida Art and Culture, Sebring, Florida. BWms

Beautiful print. The actual overall size of the print is 18 x 22½ and sells for $50.00.

Groceries & Stuff

GroceryandStuff
How wonderful it was to have a nickel to spend on an ice cold drink or a bag of silver bells, now known as candy kisses. I remember the spicy and not altogether unpleasant smell of the gasoline as it was being pumped into the little Model A Ford my folks drove--then a V-8 Ford later on. There was the ever present rat cheese on the counter that the clerk could cut to the very ounce ordered without fail it seemed, the salt mullet, old kerosene lamps and kerosene, Aspirin, BC's, Goody Powders for the "skull cramps" (yes there were folks with headaches before the computer age) and scores of various and sundry things needed before the Saturday trips to town. General Store

Project5GeneralStore
The country store was the "country club" of yesteryear, as it were. Folks met, the ladies smiled, the men tipped their hats, and all shared the latest news as well as a little gossip, inquired about the other's family members, invited each other to their church functions, country barn dances, cane grindings, peanut boiling, political rallies, and whatever else there might be in the offing-One of my favorites was the yearly Silas Green show--a very fond memory!! WHAT an absolutely fantastic time to have lived. We had everything the affluent had--just not nearly so much of it. We didn't seem to mind all that much as I recall. At least, I didn't--a cold drink and a nickel's worth of silver bells--it couldn't get any better than that...... BWms

Mule tied to a gas pump? Well, it is a handy place to hitch her. More often than not during that period of time, you were apt to see an 'Out of Gas' sign on the gas pump during the war when there was such a shortage of fuel. Or, you'd run out of gas coupons. Those who had a four-legged mode of travel were fortunate. BWms

Betts’ Place

Project0BettsPlace
The lull before the storm....not a lot of customers yet. Appears the old farmer has left his plowing (see field back of flag pole) trying to beat the crowd and get a Coca Cola to go with his brown bag lunch which is setting in the John Deere tractor seat. Also note there is an Out Of Gas sign on the gas pump. We saw a lot of that during the second World War days. Empty gas pumps and Ration Stamps were definitly not one of my favorite memories....Notice the sign says the store was est. 1935....guess who was born in 1935---- BWms

Country Store Doorstep Gang

ProjectDoorGang22
History repeating itself, the father depicted in my print, R C COLAS AND MOON PIES is now a grandfather and is carving little dolls for his grand daughter from Ivory Soap. The old country store hasn't changed, only the "gang congregated on the doorsteps". The bird dog creeping up the steps is in danger of getting his face slapped by the little kitten who has a tiny paw drawn back in preparation to do just that. Mama kitty is resting on the porch and it's a good thing she can't read cuz her newest batch of babies are being offered to kitten lovers for free. See box in right foreground. The chickens round out the group and seem oblivious of belonging to the "gang"...BWms

Tom’s Store

NewTom
Bettye has created the bluest early morning sky. Folks at "Tom's Grocery" are up before the chickens. Early morning, the coolest part of the day; the weeds and grass are dew heavy. Cases of Coca Cola bottles are stacked on the porch waiting for the soft-drink man in his rattling truck. It is another day with neighbors stopping by to be refreshed with a good word and a cool drink.
