Dinner on the Grounds

“How wonderful were the old dinners on the grounds of the country churches, the baptizing, and the fellowship! While some of the churches had their new converts baptizing in white robes, most were simply baptized in their clothes. The water was clean and relatively--at least clean enough to see if there was an unwelcome intruder swimming around your ankles (not minnows, of course. There were always minnows but they didn’t count.) We did splash around a bit to discourage the ‘unrepentant creatures’ in the water as I recall.

My grandfather was ‘turned out of church’ for playing his fiddle at a Saturday night hoe down (dance). Thankfully, he was on good terms with his Lord when he was taken home some years later. I like to think of him playing his fiddle at a Heavenly Hoe Down with All of us in attendance!!!” BWms

Shall We Gather At the River

Print depicting the little flock of worshippers gathering at the river for baptizing. One had to splash a bit when walking into the river to scare off any serpent that might be lurking. Eve should have been more diligent in her splashing and scaring off! This is a colorful print and pleasing to the eye. BWms

Baptizing at Cypress Pond

Beautiful sky opening up. An old fashioned country church baptizing in a pond surrounded by picturesque moss-covered cypress trees, and lots of warm sunshine. Of particular interest is the grandfather in the right middle ground who has been instructed by grandma to put away his fishing pole (not supposed to fish on the Sabbath!!), at least until baptizing is over. Original painting is a part of the Permanent Folk Art Collection of the Museum of Florida History, Tallahassee, Florida. BWms
