Cotton Prints
....images of cotton pickers depicted in a way of life that was harsh. These people, my mother being one of them, were truly princes and princesses of King Cotton's Court. They all deserve a revered place in history for the years spent under this King's reign. Look closely at the images and you will see fatigue, determination, challenge and a sense of accomplishment on their faces. They were King's Kids....in more ways than one...

Pick'n Cotton til Dark-thirtyPrint of some mighty tired people picking cotton til almost dark, trying to finish up the patch. No fast food restaurants for these folks to stop at and pick up supper. They either have to stop by the old country store on the way home for a few cans of something to "crack", or scramble some eggs and fry some bacon... BWms

Ben, A Cotton Pickn' Man & Bessie, A Cotton Pickn' Woman
Prints depicting very tired cotton pick'n Mama with a little guy needing some attention as he's had to entertain himself all day. He may have had a little help from his Mammy and old Bowzer, the best huntin' dog in the County. But there's just nobody like Mama when a fella's tired and hungry and needing a little tender lovin' care. BWms
Scratching out a living in the cotton fields--no harder, hotter work on the face of the earth. Women, men, and children worked along side each other in the cotton fields. These are partner prints, Bessie and Ben. Together the prints share a panoramic view of the cotton field and evening sky--with one half of the tree in each print.

Care'n And Share'n
My paternal grandparents and their neighbors helped each other at harvest times and all year round. They cared about each other, helped each other through family turmoil, and when one of them had a crisis in their lives, the other was there to lend a helping hand. If there were more caring and sharing in our lifestyles now, it would be a lot better world to live in. Having said that, I will now get off the podium..... BWms

Survival of the Fittest
Print of my original painting,"Survival of the Fittest". Please note the close-up of the young woman, pregnant yet still picking cotton, the grandmother still making time to love and caress her grandchild, and last but not least, the old faithful mule that may be a beast of burden but is nonetheless a member of this family of survivors. I particularly like the little baby in bottom left corner of print poking his tiny finger in the pig's nose. BWms

Abe, Husband & Addie, Wife
Print of Abe who has finished his cotton picking for the day and is about to go home to have supper--lima beans and cornbread or maybe fried white bacon, rice, and tomato gravy--both sound good to me!! My intentions were for Abe and his wife Addie to be displayed together (who would want to "divorce" this precious couple) but if you just HAVE TO, feel free.....BWms

Best of the Cotton Pickers

Print of a family scratching out a living in the cotton fields--no harder, hotter work on the face of the earth. King Cotton was a hard taskmaster-- a challenge for survival of the fittest....I remember a dear black lady named Ms Mattie who could pick more cotton in a day than any man in the field and she did it laughing and pok'n fun at the laggers. Everybody loved and admired her. BWms

King Cotton Reigns
Print of a cotton pick'n day coming to a close. The Gone With the Wind sunset is so breathtaking that even exhausted pickers would be compelled to straighten their backs, enjoy the gradual cooling of the day's temperatures, and thank God they can go home now and rest. BWms

Cotton Pickers Weigh'n Up
The best part of a cotton pick'n day is the end of it, when the white fluffy stuff is weighed and you get the green stuff to put in your pocket or pocket book. There was always a bit of competitiveness too as there was something about being one who picked the most that would put a smile on your face. A very tired smile, but a smile nonetheless.... BWms
